Mark Twain and His Use of Humor
Samuel Clemons became known to the world as Mark Twain the man of satire and humor.à Through his humor, he entertained the world during his lifetime and he has continued to entertain for generations.à Practically everyone found him funny, but not everyone understood his biting satire.à His subtly in itself was humorous.à Twain was known toward the end of his life as ââ¬Å"the man in white.â⬠He wore an all white suit and with his shock of white gray hair and he would lecture or perform in front of a black or dark background.à His image, when he performed, was a contrast between good and evil, just like his humor was funny on one level and piercing on another.à It has not needed the careful, retrospective estimate that a great writer's death usually brings to his works for the reading public to have come to the conclusion years ago that SAMUEL L. CLEMENS measures up to a vastly more complex figure in literature than the mere ââ¬Å"funny manâ⬠that his first and amazingly popular achievements in authorship seemed to make him. (Changing Humor) Mark Twain was exposed to humor from an early age.à He was brought up in Hannibal, Missouri on the banks of the Mississippi River.à The location of his upbringing was an important aspect of his life.à Steamboats made regular stops daily in Hannibal.à This brought a variety of visitors to the town.à Many of those visitors had interesting and humorous stories to tell and Twain was always ready to listen.à Most of the humor that he came in contact with were from the men who worked on the steamboats.à They would gather by the local stores and the river bank to talk and enjoy a smoke.à The young boys of the town found it the highlight of all of their entertainment to hang out around the men and listen to their stories of wild adventures laced with incidents that were funny. There were those who thought that Twain was funny because he was ignorant, but they were mistaken.à Twain's repeated professions of innocence or ineptitude in literary craftsmanship are not to be believed. (Horn)à He was an entertainer as well as an author.à Audiences enjoyed Twainââ¬â¢s delivery of his own stories as they did reading themselves.à He saw many flaws in society, and he knew that writing articles and lecturing people about these vices would only turn them away. However, when laced with humor, people were much more likely to listen, and then internalize the message.à In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the social injustices of child abuse, slavery, feuding, and hypocrisy in religion are told in such a way that the reader is amused as well as shocked at the atrocities. He wrote that Huck, on his decision not to turn in Jim, a runaway slave, that he would go to hell if the only way that one could enter heaven was to accept that a man could be owned by another person. Between 1876, when he began Huckleberry Finn, and 1884, when he completed it, Twain suffered a series of personal and financial disasters from which he never recovered.à A short list would include: the loss of close friends, a drastic break with his publisher, financial troubles running to bankruptcy, ruinous involvements with various patents he had acquired; a bitterly disappointing return to the Mississippi River, Hannibal, and boyhood scenes; and the beginnings of chronic ill health for the four deeply loved female members of his family. (Bercovitch)à Yet with all of the pressures of life he still used humor in his writing. Twain made use of the newly settled Southwest as the outset of his career.à Using dialect and the regional setting as a tool for humor was just one way that he entertained his readers. The genre that developed originates from the politics and oral histories of a burgeoning regionââ¬â full of fire and out to prove itself to the world. This enthusiasm manifests itself in bawdy, violent, and predominately masculine portrayals of the world of the Southwest. Yet beneath the savagery of the stories, there is an effort at realism and regional descriptions that had not been attempted previously. (Price) à He was able to take them to a place that seemed to move at a slower pace, and where the ââ¬Å"city slickerâ⬠with all his education was no match for the common sense of the frontiersman.à This is notable in the story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, where the narrator from the city is taken and made out the fool by an older uneducated man in a country store. Southwestern humor was not the only way that Twain displayed his humor.à He did not feel the need to limit himself by only writing regional literature.à In A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurââ¬â¢s Court, the Yankee is an idealist who believes that when transported back in time, that technology and reforms in the church could change the morality of the world.à The naivety is presented in a humorous way, but people were forced to look at morality instead of only focusing on technology. The short story Luck displayed quite humorously the intelligence of military leaders.à While the story is set in England, the purpose was to question leaders in all countries.à He tells the reader that the man being honored as a brilliant military leader is really a fool.à The narrator is a minister so he should be believable.à He lets us in on the secret that the man has only made all of his heroic and brilliant actions were actually foolish blunders and mistakes. In Twainââ¬â¢s later years his humor changed.à He suffered tragedies that would shake anyone.à His humor transformed into bitter satire.à While in Europe, he received word that his favorite daughter, Susie had meningitis.à By the time he and Olivia, his wife, returned to America, Susie had died.à This devastated him, and he never really recovered from his grief. A few years later, Olivia died.à He threw himself into the care of his epileptic daughter, Jean.à Unfortunately, Jean had a seizure and drowned in her bathtub.à Mark Twain had lost most of his family and was a broken man.à After the suffering he went through in such a short amount of time could only affect his humor.à His anger toward God was the target of most of his satire. In his last work, The Mysterious Stranger, Twain chronicles the wanderings of Satan, the nephew of the famous Satan, on earth.à This work was a product of his bitterness at the loss of the beloved women in his life.à It was published six years after his death and was not completely finished.à However, it should only be natural that a person would change during the course of his/her life. Mark Twain will always be known to the public as a humorist.à He enlightened millions with his social ideas in a funny and entertaining way.à He brought many issues to life through an amusing little boy that made people think of days gone by.à He will continue to do so for many years to come.à Humor has changed drastically over the years.à Mark Twainââ¬â¢s writings are different from the humor today that relies on someone being hurt or frightened silly.à It is refreshing to see the work of a humorist with substance. Becker: ââ¬ÅOutsideââ¬Â Essay
ââ¬â¹a) According to Howard Becker, central fact about deviance is that ââ¬Å"it is created by society. Becker does not mean that the causes of deviance can be derived from the social environment of the deviant or the ââ¬Å"social factorsâ⬠that causes an individual to engage in deviant behavior. Rather, Becker means that social groups create deviance by creating the rules or norms that must be adhered to and if they are violatedââ¬âthe violation will result in what the group deems as being deviance. Thus, the individuals who go against the norms or rules of a social group will be labeled as being an ââ¬Å"outsiderâ⬠. ââ¬â¹b) According to Becker, a deviant is an individual ââ¬Å"to whom that label has successfully been appliedâ⬠. He asserts that deviance is not a characteristic of the action a person commits; rather it is an outcome of the rules and sanctions used by others to an ââ¬Å"outsiderâ⬠or the reaction of others to an individualââ¬â¢s a ction. Deviant behavior is deviant when there is an audience that judges it as such. ââ¬â¹c) Becker states that ââ¬Å"deviantâ⬠is not a homogenous category, because deviance in and of itself is a result of the reactions of others to an individualââ¬â¢s action. Therefore, while one social group may view a particular individualââ¬â¢s action as being deviant, another may not. Deviance is contextual; it depends on the audience that is judging the individualââ¬â¢s action. One cannot assume that every individual who has been deemed as being a ââ¬Å"deviantâ⬠are the same, because the processing of labeling individuals is not reliable. There are individuals who have been labeled deviant who have not broken a rule, such as individuals who are considered deviant because of their race or religion. Also, one cannot assume that the group of deviants contains individuals who have actually broken a rule, since there are individuals who may have escaped scrutiny and therefore are not included in the category of deviants. ââ¬â¹d) Whether people respond to an act as being deviant depends on several factors, such as the type of act that is committed, the setting in which the action is taking place, and the person committing the act. Deviant acts that are considered not to be illegal or that does not harming other individuals, such as having tattoos, dressing eccentrically, are sometimes overlooked or deemed as being not so bad. Whereas, deviant acts that tend to feature criminal behavior is usually judged seriously by individuals who do not partake in such behavior, such as child abuse, domestic violence, murder, or rape. The setting in which the action is taking place plays a role in whether or not people will judge theà act as being deviant. For example, if a woman decides to go to attend a church service in a provocative style of clothing, then she will be judged by the other parishioners as being deviant, because that particular social group has guidelines as to how individuals must look and conduct themselves while being in that particular setting. However, if that same woman were to go to a risquà © club dressed in the same manner, she would not be seen as being a deviant, because that particular social group has its own guidelines as to how people look and conduct themselves. Lastly, the type of person committing the act plays a role in whether or not individuals will respond to that act as being deviant. For example, there can be two teenagers who decide to shoplift from a store. One of the teenagers comes from a middle-class family who lives in the suburbs, while the other teenager comes f rom a working-class family that does not live in such a nice neighborhood. Since there are some individuals who automatically associate the poor to working class with very negative stereotypes, it would not be unlikely that the teenager from the working class family would be judged more severely than the teenager who comes from a middle-class family. ââ¬â¹e) Hughesââ¬â¢ concept of the ââ¬Å"master statusâ⬠applies to deviance in the sense that, if an individual possesses a deviant trait, other individuals may assume that he/she possesses all of the negative traits that goes along with that one particular trait. Also, an individual having the status of being a deviant has the ability to override all of the other statuses that individual possesses. For example, a man may have the status of being a father, husband, and a social worker. However, if he becomes incarcerated due to a drug charge, his status as a convict will override all of his other statuses in the eyes of many people. Even after he is released from prison, he will be seen as an ex-co nvict first and foremost, and then as the other statuses that he possesses.

Operation Torch
Reasons for Initiating Operation Torch ââ¬â ââ¬â The Allies planned to occupy Vichy France to prevent the land from being occupied by Axis; the invasion would eventually force Axis powers to fight a two-front war; also helped to diminish transportation of supplies to Axis forces; Key Personalities (Involvements) ââ¬â ââ¬â General Dwight D. Eisenhower ââ¬â ââ¬â Jean Francois Darlan ââ¬â ââ¬â Andrew Cunningham ââ¬â Objective(s) of Operation Torch ââ¬â ââ¬â Allies planned to team up with Vichy France in North Africa in order to take Tunisia before Germans could occupy it from nearby Sicily. After invading North Africa and convincing the French to join the Allies, American and British forces planned to head directly to Sicily, invade, and move up to the core of Europe. Victory here would also allow the Allies to clear up the Mediterranean of Axis forces for their own personal use. Important Readings ââ¬â from Earl Riceââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Strate gic Battles in Europeâ⬠. . . ââ¬â page 24: The Americans joined their British allies. Roosevelt's military advisers wanted to build up immediately for an invasion of the European mainland later in the year or early in 1943.Churchill and his counselors declared that an invasion of the continent so soon would be next to impossible because of insufficient time to assemble the necessary forces and too few available landing craft in which to haul them across the English Channel. Churchill and his advisors did not want to risk a failed invasion. ââ¬â page 25: Churchill instead favored extending operations in North Africa, where British forces were already fighting. he argued that seizing North Africa and beyond would introduce American troops to the action, boost American morale and appease Stalin's demands for a second front. But Roosevelt's advisors were unreceptive to Churchill's plan and suggested redirecting U. S efforts to the Pacific Theater. In June 1942, Churchill to ld Roosevelt that Britain was both unable and unwilling to undertake the invasion of Europe in 1942 or even in 1943. Having already been driven from Norway, France and Greece by the Germans, the British (now page 26) intended to stay the next time they landed on the Continent. ââ¬â page 26: Roosevelt accepted Churchill's proposal. Torchââ¬â¢s primary objective was to take Tunisia before the Germans could occupy it from nearby Sicily. The Anglo-American invasion force in the west would then move eastward to link up with Lieutenant General Bernard L. Montgomeryââ¬â¢s British 8th army, advancing westward through Libya. Together the 2 Allied armies would form a vise within which to crush Field Marshal Erwin Rommelââ¬â¢s 100,000-man German-Italian army in Libya, including his vaunted Afrika Korps. But first they had to deal with the French. https://www. diigo. com/list/audreym96/operation-torch SOURCE and Earl Rices ââ¬Å"Stategic Battles in Europeâ⬠; Even though Stalin required that the Allies attack somewhere in Europe, Operation Torch was successful: the Allies gained a wide amount of land and the Suez Canal was saved. So whatââ¬â¢s the importance of the Suez Canal, huh? The Suez Canal provided a short sea route between Britain and Middle East oil supplies, and its imperial colonies in Asia and the Far East. It enabled the Allies to move supplies, men, equipment, fuel, and raw materials around the world to where they were needed much more quickly than if they had had to sail around the southern tip of Africa, which would have made them much more vulnerable to U-boat attack. Why the British cared SO much about North Africa? ââ¬â When the second World War broke out, there were many soldiers from many different nations in Cairo. The Italians were there, but there were really no serious attempts to help Mussolini by them. The only real enemies in Cairo were the Germans. The British secret police watched them very carefully. There was a political r aid in which the British caught German spies that had come to Cairo with money, a radio transmitter and a house boat on the Nile.Because the English were unable to ship all of their supplies in from Britain, they trained and employed thousands of Egyptians in various trades. Some were mechanics, electricians, drivers, engineers and even lens grinders. They repaired military equipment and even built trains and machinery. Egypt started to weave their own cloth out of silk and wool. Advances were made in mining, cement, petroleum refining and chemical industries. In Egypt, the British spent over ten million pounds every year. In July of 1942, the British were pushed back almost to Alexandria.Rommel stopped at Alamein because his troops were exhausted and almost out of supplies. The British rushed to Cairo. Soldiers were sent to various places to train while other got ready to retreat from the city. The British officers went to the banks to try to get their money while at the British he adquarters, vital papers were burned. This scare changed Cairo to a point where it would never be the same again. Montgomery took over the Eighth Army in the desert and moved them to Alamein. He won this battle in October or November of 1942.After this battle, Egypt lost most of the fantasy and glamour that had been year during the years of occupation. Now the city settled down to the first order of business, national liberation. http://www. touregypt. net/hbritish. htm SOURCE ALGERIA AND MOROCCO ââ¬â http://www. ushmm. org/wlc/en/article. php? ModuleId=10007303 Operation Torch, the Algeria-Morocco military campaign, began on November 8, 1942, and ended on November 11, 1942. US and British forces, commanded by American General Dwight D. Eisenhower, carried out this campaign.Three task forces landed on the beaches near Casablanca on the Moroccan Atlantic Coast; near Oran in western Algeria; and near Algiers, more than 250 miles to the east in Algeria. Although Vichy French forces initially resisted, a coup d'etat by the French resistance in Algiers on November 8 neutralized the French XIX Corps before the Allied landing. General Mark Clark, Eisenhower's deputy, induced Admiral Jean Francois Darlan, Vichy High Commissioner for North Africa, and General Alphonse Juin, the commander of the Vichy French armed orces in North Africa, to order French forces to cease armed resistance in Oran and Morocco on November 10ââ¬â11. In return for his cooperation, Darlan temporarily remained head of the French administration as the French forces in North Africa joined the Allies. The Allied landings triggered the German occupation of the unoccupied zone of France and the rapid dispatch of German troops to Tunisia. To avoid capture of their Mediterranean Fleet by the Germans, the Vichy French scuttled it in the harbors of Toulon on November 27, 1942. By the end of November, the Allies had crossed the Tunisian border in the northwest.

Both the top managers and the Juniors realize what is anticipated from them and consequently there is no part imprecision or disarray. When both top managers and subordinates know each other about there work then, there will be no confusion between them. Disadvantages of Management by Objectives 1 . MOB can be accomplishing because it has the complete backing of the top management. If the McCain t op manager will not supportive with there staff then, the strategies will no completed. Whatever, strategic plan made by the management should be related to staff. 2. They may be less weight to co-occur with the administration during setting objectives and goals and these objectives may be set unreasoningly high. This may low down their assurance and they may get to be suspicious about the logic behind MOB. An investigation into service quality and satisfaction level in 4 star Essay
An investigation into service quality and satisfaction level in 4 star UK hotel industry - Essay Example Hotels are an important part of the tourism industry and with the trend to globalization, there have been an increasing number of hotels cropping up, offering a wide range of facilities to customers. Four and Five star hotels cater to the affluent public as well as members of the business community and stand out from the other hotels in that they are associated with quality products and superior levels of services. This is why customers are also prepared to pay higher rates at such hotels, on the basis of brand recognition and expectations of a superior level of service. Within the UK, the hospitality industry is highly competitive and service levels are a vital factor in ensuring a steady supply of customers to enhance productivity of these hotels. Travel and tourism are booming today and several studies have already been carried out on the levels of passenger and hotel resident satisfaction across the globe. The impact of services and facilities available at hotels and their impact upon tourist satisfaction have also been assessed in other studies; however the number of studies that have examined the impact of these services in terms of customer perception specifically at four star hotels in the UK are fewer. This study could therefore help to provide more insight into this area and add to the pool of existing research. Hotels play an important role in tourism business [Medik and Ingram, 2000], since they serve as a venue for the conducting of important business transactions as well as tourist and holiday destinations, providing an area where monies are spent. The quality of the accommodation offered at the hotels plays a vital role in their selection by people who use them [Cooper et al, 1996]. ]. In the atmosphere of fierce global competition that exists in todayââ¬â¢s world, adopting the best practices in respect to the management and execution of business has assumed importance in terms of enhancing productivity

Mechanical properties of chassis Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Mechanical properties of chassis - Assignment Example Below is a representation of the car chassis. Parts to be added to the assembly of car chassis include screws. Screws are used in joining the chassis with other parts of the vehicle to aid in easy maintenance of the spare parts. Clutch is also to be included in the chassis assembly as it connects and disconnects the engine power; which makes up a main component of the chassis for power provision. The gear box must also be added to the assembly of the chassis this part works hand in hand with the clutch. Steering wheel, bearing, spring, damping, stabilizer, and brakes determine the dynamics of the vehicle. Damping is used in increasing driving safety and comfort by electronically controlling damping forces for each wheel. A control unit works together with the continuous damping system to calculate the necessary damping forces and adjust the dampers when required. The chassis structure is supported by wheels and Tyre components, which hold the grip of the road and the car. Shock absor bers and springs damp the shocks and vibrations of the car and road this helps in maintaining stability and comfort of the car (Remus, Timothy, and Coddington, 274). Welders next transform the engineered concept into a reality by providing flat surfaces. The end products from the welders are then shot blasted to a white metal, and it is ready to be painted. The chassis is then painted with a urethane coat of high standards as well as a high zinc primer. Next, assembly takes place, the body of the vehicle is linked to the chassis.

Project Managment - Team work Evaluation Assignment
Project Managment - Team work Evaluation - Assignment Example The activities that fall under these two processes are; decision on leadership through voting, this is also in line with thinking through the purpose of the group, decision on tasks for each member is a strategy to ensure fair share in the workload, all the activities that come prior to tackling of tasks are under transition processes; the plans, goal specification and planning the activities here are like decision on the backup plan as a group to avoid clashing of roles, set up on calendar et al. (Kivipelto & Yliruka, 2012). Action processes are a vital part of the taxonomy, what is entailed here is actual activities that are the sole purpose of a team or rather a group. Information and data are assembled within, members writing down their ideas and opinions, communication of venues for meetings, working on writing skills and grammar are pronounced in this process. The leader sets goals to be completed in every meeting to avoid time waste, the leader also monitors progress. Upon completion of own work, there is team monitoring, members who complete their tasks earlier help their colleagues. Evaluation of work, provision of any vital feedback, coordination and often working in pairs come in action processes. More importantly, the time for completion of work is set in this process (Kivipelto & Yliruka, 2012). Interpersonal processes come later in the taxonomy of team processes. Orchestrating conflict management techniques is employed here. Upon the rise of challenges, the crew chief would exchange tasks of the group members and work in liaison with the group to find an amicable solution. Identification of individual attributes, i.e., strengths takes place and when disagreements occur a management process would be held for instance re-evaluation of objectives and vote on decisions for the best interest of the group. Encouragement occurred during meetings, because of the positive attitude shown. Working in pairs and communication
